Guelb el Aouj Iron Ore Project Water Supply
Mauritania, Northwest Africa
| Client | Sphere Minerals Limited |
| Industries | Mining |
| Services | Geotechnical Engineering, Groundwater/Hydrogeology |
Assignment
In addition to resource estimation and mining studies, Golder Associates was commissioned to source a reliable water supply estimated at 10-15 ML/day for the life of the project (30 years), while considering water quality and distance from the proposed mine.
Our Role
Golder Associates' water supply study for the project included:
- Analysis of existing hydrogeological information from wellfield data and geophysical surveys
- Design and implementation of two ground geophysical programs
- Design and implementation of two groundwater supply exploration programs covering over 6,000 km2
- Interpretation of downhole geophysical surveys data
- Conducting and interpreting four long-term (three month) and three short-term pumping tests
- Groundwater geochemical assessment for major ions and salinity
- Evaluation of groundwater supply availability using numerical modelling (Feflow) and estimation of long-term drawdown to assist environmental impact assessment
- Design of a wellfield development strategy
